The Southwestern Surgical Congress is a non-profit organization comprised of approximately 2000 general surgeons and associated specialty surgeons organized to stimulate and promote the progress of surgery. Fellows of the SWCS are reputable, board certified surgeons residing in states comprising The Congress, and other areas as approved by The Congress, including Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming.
The purpose of The North Pacific Surgical Association (NPSA) is to bring together persons residing in the States of Oregon and Washington and the Province of British Columbia and Alberta who desire to enhance the science and art of surgery and the quality of surgical practice through scientific meetings and professional discussions. The NPSA was organized in 1912.
The Association for Surgical Education was formed in 1980 and its members represent over 190 medical schools and institutions throughout the United States and Canada. Its primary goal is to promote the art and science of education in surgery.
Founded in 1981, The Association of Women Surgeons mission is to inspire, encourage, and enable women surgeons to realize their professional and personal goals. It seeks to promote professional growth and development, enhance and facilitate interaction among women surgeons throughout the world, foster an environment supportive of personal values and individual diversity, and to advance the highest standards of competence and ethical behavior.
The Association of VA Surgeons (AVAS)
The American Society of Breast Surgeons was formed to encourage the study of breast surgery, to promote research and development of advanced surgery tehniques, to improve standards of practice for breast surgery in the United States, and serve as a forum for the exchange of ideas. Founded in 1995, it now has more than 1900 members throughout the United States.
The Association of VA Surgeons was founded in 1967. Its stated purpose is simply to "improve patient care, medical education and research in surgery in the Veterans Administration". Since 1977 annual surgical symposia are hosted by university-affiliated VA Medical Centers. The AVAS is a non-profit, non-political educational organization. It refrains from lobbying Congress, but its opinions on managing the VA are communicated to Central Office or Headquarters by its members of the surgical field advisory group.
The Society of Black Academic Surgeons (SBAS)
The Midwest Surgical Association is a surgical organization made up of surgeons who have established reputations as practitioners, authors, teachers, and/or original investigators. The objective of this society is to exemplify and promote the highest standards of surgical practice, especially among young surgeons in the Midwest. The annual meeting is held in August each year in different locations throughout the Midwest and consists of a stimulating scientific program of the highest quality and a social program planned with children and families in mind.
The Society of Black Academic Surgeons (SBAS) http://www.sbas.net/ was founded in 1989 against the backdrop of a paucity of African-American surgeons in academic medicine and the absence of an organized network of African-American surgeons to stimulate, mentor and inspire young surgeons and medical students to pursue academic careers. The Society's annual meeting is designed to stimulate academic excellence among its members by providing a forum of scholarship in collaboration with the leading Departments of Surgery in the United States.
ABOUT AMERICAN JOURNAL OF SURGERY
The American Journal of Surgery is a peer-reviewed journal designed for the general surgeon who performs abdominal, cancer, vascular, head and neck, breast, colorectal, and other forms of surgery. AJS is the official journal of eight major surgical societies and publishes their official papers as well as independently submitted clinical studies, editorials, reviews, brief reports, correspondence and book reviews.
