The British Trauma Society was founded in 1989 by a group of orthopaedic surgeons who recognised the need to consider trauma care as a multidisciplinary concern. Since then the society has flourished and embraces the interests of other, equally important, specialties, such as emergency medicine, anaesthesia and intensive care, general surgery, radiology and faciomaxillary surgery. In accordance with its commitment to multidisciplinary care, the Society plans to attract other specialists, particularly neurosurgeons who play such an important part in the spectrum of trauma seen in the UK.

The Australasian Trauma Society (ATS) was set up in 1997 by a group of health professionals interested in trauma care. Membership of the Society is open to doctors, nurses and paramedical personnel from both Australia and New Zealand. Associate membership is open to others who may not be included in the above categories.

The aims of the Society as detailed in the Constitution are as follows:

• To foster and promote scientific research into all aspects of Trauma Care.
• To improve the standard and delivery of Trauma Services to the Australasian community.
• To provide opportunities for all those involved in Trauma Care in Australasia to further their scientific knowledge and exchange information in this field.
• To promote and develop the highest standards of patient care, education and organisation in the field of trauma in order to deliver higher standards of community care.
• To promote communications and relations with international organisations involved in Trauma Care.

The Hellenic Association of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (HOAST), with 10 subspeciality sections and Education College, has its own offices and teaching theatre at Amalias Fleming 20, T.K. 15123, Maroussi, Greece. Once a year is holding the Annual Meeting, usually in October, and issues the Acta Orthopaedica Hellenica quarterly.

The Saudi Orthopaedic Association has been approved on 3rd Rabi Al Thani 1426 (11th May 2005). This association is under the umbrella of King Saud University, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Our membership is open to any orthopaedic surgeons in the Kingdom or in-training orthopaedic Residents, in addition to honorary membership for those interested from field related to our speciality. We also have international, permanent (senior surgeons) and affiliated memberships. We aim at improving the orthopaedic service given at different levels of patient’s care. We hope to achieve this by reaching to our members, non-member orthopaedic surgeons and other governmental or civil organizations and try to find solutions to problems of trauma and orthopaedic in the Kingdom. We are also aiming to upgrade orthopaedic knowledge and skills of orthopaedic surgeons whether they are in cities or towns through courses, symposia and workshops. During the past two years the association has participated in several nation meetings and have sponsored 18 of its members to outside meetings and symposia. We have also filed a request for a combined meeting with AAOS and SICOT as well as signing an agreement with INJURY Journal. We are trying to update our web site (www.soassn.org) and have more links for members who are now 320.

In 1892 a group of surgeons with a passionate interest in pathology, osteoarticolar traumas and congenital muscular-skeletal deformities, proposed settingup the Italian Orthopedic Society and they outlined a statute that was approved unanimously.

The speech given by A. Codivilla at the Congress in 1906 was a milestone and the manifesto of the Society and of orthopedics in the twentieth century. It defines the identity and the aims of the Society, and it justifies its detachment, or better, autonomy from General Surgery.

The Society, restarted its activity after the war-time interval, in 1918, and developed over the following years, and in 1935 took on its current name of Italian Society of Orthopedics and Tramatology.

Over the past fifty years the Society, which currently has 5000 members, has reached new objectives and its members have contributed to a continuing improvement of orthopedic surgery techniques and an increase of both the number and quality orthopedic centers of both universities and hospitals.

The position of president is filled, in alternating years, by representatives of university or hospital area.

Today the Society is chaired by Prof. Pietro Bartolozzi from Verona University. SIOT has a prestigious main office in Rome, with meetings and conferences facilities together with a traditional and IT library (www.siot.it).

SIOT organizes annual national scientific congresses, "Congresso Nazionale della Società Italiana di Orthopedia e Traumatologia", the organization of which is assigned to the Assembly of members, four years before the event.

The next National Congress will be the 94th National Congress of SIOT. It will be held from 7-11, November 2009 in Milan at Milano Fiera, under the presidency of Prof. M. d'Imporzano and Prof. G. Peretti.

The themes will be: A review of surgery for prostheses - Mini-invasive surgery techniques in orthopedics

SIOT has 6 committees, 15 commissions, 26 super-specialized societies, 4 interregional societies and the NUOVA ASCOTI, an active and articulate union organization that is recognized as one of the most qualified voices among the unions of medical personal.

One of SIOT primary objective is to improve scientific knowledge and exchange among members.

In this aim, it is a great pleasure for me to have signed the affiliation with the journal "INJURY" an outstanding and renowmed pubblication in the field.

We will do our best to contribute to the further diffusion and improvement of this journal.

To this purpose we have charged three, very active members, to cooperate with the Journal editorial board:

The Küntscher Society for intramedullary nailing began as an association of traumatologists who worked with Gerhard Kuentscher and was organized to continue his methods of fracture treatment using intramedullary nailing.

It is the society's purpose to teach intermedullary nailing worldwide and continue the development of the methods, research and ideas of Prof. Gerhard Küntscher.

Küntscher worked in the Northern Part of Germany in and nearby Kiel, but he travelled worldwide showing the advantages of intramedullary osteosynthesis to improve the care of long bone fractures.

Today we offer an active website, annual meetings, focus courses, generous prizes, travel fellowships, and affiliation with the Journal INJURY for publications. Our meetings are not only lively and informative, they are also fun. Many innovations in intramedullary methods had their debut at our gatherings.
