(iii) Basic science: computed tomography
Summary
Computed tomography utilises a rotating X-ray source combined with multiple detectors in the latest scanners. This data can then be processed in numerous ways to provide axial, multi-planar and 3D images for diagnostic purposes. This modality has rapidly developed since its inception in direct relationship to the exponential increase in computer technology with a corresponding increase in its range of applications.
