As of 2007, no longer published by Elsevier

Asthma Magazine helps asthma patients and their families to learn more about
their disease and how they can control it. Because successful management of asthma and related allergies depends on close cooperation
between patients and their health care providers, Asthma Magazine enables patients and their families to communicate more effectively
with their physician and respirator therapist. Each bimonthly issue provides valuable information for all levels of readers, with features
designed for both children and adults, and a glossary of asthma and allergy terms.

It was ten years ago this month that I worked on the mock-up for the first issue of Asthma Magazine. That mock-up developed into the premier issue of the magazine, which was published in the summer of 1996. In reflecting back on almost ten years of publication, I could not help but ponder the many changes that have occurred in the field of asthma during this last decade.</description><dc:title>Editor's note</dc:title><dc:creator>Rachel E. Anaphylaxis is a multiple-organ hypersensitivity reaction that needs immediate and appropriate treatment. It is important for both patients at risk and clinicians to be aware of the symptoms, as well as appropriate protocols of treatment, according to research presented in November at the Annual Meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) in Anaheim, Calif.</description><dc:title>News update</dc:title><dc:creator></dc:creator><dc:identifier>10.1016/j.asthmamag.2005.12.007</dc:identifier><dc:source>Asthma Magazine 11, 1 (2006)</dc:source><dc:date>2006-01-01</dc:date><prism:publicationName>Asthma Magazine</prism:publicationName><prism:publicationDate>2006-01-01</prism:publicationDate><prism:volume>11</prism:volume><prism:number>1</prism:number><prism:issueIdentifier>S1088-0712(06)X0049-3</prism:issueIdentifier><prism:section>News Update</prism:section><prism:startingPage>7</prism:startingPage><prism:endingPage>7</prism:endingPage></item><item rdf:about="http://www.journals.elsevierhealth.com/periodicals/ymas/article/PIIS1088071206000033/abstract?rss=yes"><title>The mail bag</title><link>http://www.journals.elsevierhealth.com/periodicals/ymas/article/PIIS1088071206000033/abstract?rss=yes</link><description>

“Those who forget history are destined to repeat it.” The only potent group to correct the disarray concerning asthma in schools is the PTA. Laws are somewhat useless since they need enforcement. In addition to a loud voice (PTAs should go to TV, radio news, and newspapers), PTAs should collect statistics regarding days (or hours) of school missed, emergency [doctor] visits of students affected, and parent's time off from work.</description><dc:title>The mail bag</dc:title><dc:creator>George Santayaro, Robert J. Especially in the winter months, people tend to spend a great deal of time indoors. This may lead to increased levels of exposure to asthma and allergy triggers. If you experience allergic symptoms or asthma, you are sensitive to “triggers,” including particles carried in the air. These “triggers” can set off a reaction in your lungs and other parts of your body. Triggers can be found indoors or outdoors, but there are a significant number lurking in indoor environments, such as in our homes and schools–many of which are difficult or impossible to see. Triggers may be things that cause an allergic reaction or they may be irritants–substances that irritate the lungs and for some people trigger asthma symptoms.</description><dc:title>Controlling asthma and allergy triggers in the home</dc:title><dc:creator></dc:creator><dc:identifier>10.1016/j.asthmamag.2006.01.002</dc:identifier><dc:source>Asthma Magazine 11, 1 (2006)</dc:source><dc:date>2006-01-01</dc:date><prism:publicationName>Asthma Magazine</prism:publicationName><prism:publicationDate>2006-01-01</prism:publicationDate><prism:volume>11</prism:volume><prism:number>1</prism:number><prism:issueIdentifier>S1088-0712(06)X0049-3</prism:issueIdentifier><prism:section>Asthma News from the American Lung Association</prism:section><prism:startingPage>14</prism:startingPage><prism:endingPage>16</prism:endingPage></item><item rdf:about="http://www.journals.elsevierhealth.com/periodicals/ymas/article/PIIS1088071205001809/abstract?rss=yes"><title>Negotiating “asthma control” This buzzword is the new focus of asthma care</title><link>http://www.journals.elsevierhealth.com/periodicals/ymas/article/PIIS1088071205001809/abstract?rss=yes</link><description>

If you are reading this article, asthma most likely plays a role in your life—as an asthma patient yourself, a caregiver of a child with asthma, or a health care professional who treats people with asthma. Having had experience with asthma, the odds are good that you have heard the terms “mild, moderate, and severe” to describe a patient's asthma according to its severity.</description><dc:title>Negotiating “asthma control” This buzzword is the new focus of asthma care</dc:title><dc:creator>Susan Berg</dc:creator><dc:identifier>10.1016/j.asthmamag.2005.12.002</dc:identifier><dc:source>Asthma Magazine 11, 1 (2006)</dc:source><dc:date>2006-01-01</dc:date><prism:publicationName>Asthma Magazine</prism:publicationName><prism:publicationDate>2006-01-01</prism:publicationDate><prism:volume>11</prism:volume><prism:number>1</prism:number><prism:issueIdentifier>S1088-0712(06)X0049-3</prism:issueIdentifier><prism:section>Features</prism:section><prism:startingPage>17</prism:startingPage><prism:endingPage>19</prism:endingPage></item><item rdf:about="http://www.journals.elsevierhealth.com/periodicals/ymas/article/PIIS1088071205001810/abstract?rss=yes"><title>Jerome Bettis has tackled his asthma: An interview</title><link>http://www.journals.elsevierhealth.com/periodicals/ymas/article/PIIS1088071205001810/abstract?rss=yes</link><description>
Jerome Bettis, the Pittsburgh Steelers's star running back, may be best known for the rushing records he has accumulated. He is fifth on the NFL's all-time rushing list with 13,467 yards and is third in NFL history with 3428 rushing attempts. He is only the second Steelers running back to pass the 10,000-yard rushing mark, and now he is a Super Bowl Champion, too. However, what many people don't know is that Jerome has asthma. He works hard to keep it well-controlled so that it does not interfere with his football career.

Hormones are not Janice Wilcox's favorite subject. Three years ago, the 49-year-old marketing manager from Chicago, Ill., began experiencing irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats, irritability, and weight gain. Shortly afterward, her physician diagnosed her as experiencing perimenopause, the period of time leading up to menopause.</description><dc:title>Unmasking the role of hormones in asthma: Estrogen and progestrone may affect asthma</dc:title><dc:creator>Gregory Alford</dc:creator><dc:identifier>10.1016/j.asthmamag.2005.12.005</dc:identifier><dc:source>Asthma Magazine 11, 1 (2006)</dc:source><dc:date>2006-01-01</dc:date><prism:publicationName>Asthma Magazine</prism:publicationName><prism:publicationDate>2006-01-01</prism:publicationDate><prism:volume>11</prism:volume><prism:number>1</prism:number><prism:issueIdentifier>S1088-0712(06)X0049-3</prism:issueIdentifier><prism:section>Features</prism:section><prism:startingPage>23</prism:startingPage><prism:endingPage>25</prism:endingPage></item><item rdf:about="http://www.journals.elsevierhealth.com/periodicals/ymas/article/PIIS1088071205001792/abstract?rss=yes"><title>Dispelling three myths about children and allergies</title><link>http://www.journals.elsevierhealth.com/periodicals/ymas/article/PIIS1088071205001792/abstract?rss=yes</link><description>From asthma to food allergies, allergic diseases are on the rise. As more children are affected by these diseases, it is more important than ever to dispel some of the myths about children and allergies and to begin treating the allergic child early. We may be able to halt progression of these diseases if the allergic child is treated promptly.

Many of us refer to any over-the-counter analgesic as an “aspirin.” The choices in the pain reliever aisle of your drug store are tremendous—often with different versions or formulations to address specific symptoms. Despite the variety, most over-the-counter pain relievers can be broken down into two types: nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and acetametaphin.
