Normal anatomy of the avian skin and feathers

Understanding the normal gross and microscopic anatomy of the integument and the growth and development of feathers enables the clinician to better interpret abnormalities. This brief review discusses the normal microscopic anatomy of the skin and feathers, the development of feathers, and the arrangement of feathers on the skin. The structure of the beak, claws, uropygial gland, comb, and wattles also is briefly presented.
